Recommendation to cancel 20 Pharmaceutical’s license

bangladesh-flag-mapA parliamentary watchdog on Wednesday strongly recommended that the government cancel the licences of 20 pharmaceutical companies for producing substandard medicines.

The recommendation was made after a five-member investigation panel placed its report in a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Healthy Ministry at parliament secretariat. The 20 companies are:

  1. Aexim Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  2. Avert Pharma Ltd.
  3. Bikalpa Friends Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  4. Dolphin Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  5. Drugland Limited
  6. Globe Laboratories (Pvt.) Ltd.
  7. Jalpha Laboratories Ltd.
  8. Kafma Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  9. Medico Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  10. National Drug Company Ltd.
  11. North Bengal Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  12. Remo Chemical Ltd.
  13. Rid Pharma Ltd.
  14. Skylab Ltd.
  15. Spark Pharmaceutical Ltd.
  16. Sunypun Pharmaceutical Ltd.
  17. Today Pharma Ltd.
  18. Tropical Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  19. Universal Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  20. Stars Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

The parliamentary body ran a discussion over the report and asked the ministry to take punitive action against the makers of spurious medicines. It also advocated the state initiate a track-and-trace system in producing drugs. The following 14 companies have no capability to produce any kind of antibiotics:

Committee members, including Health Minister Mohammad Nasim, State Minister Zahid Maleque, AFM Ruhul Haque, Yunus Ali Sarker and Selina Begum, attended the meeting with Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim in the chair. Nazmul Hasan Papan, president of medicine manufacturers’ association, was present at the meeting on a special invitation.

“The committee has asked the ministry to work in line with probe body’s recommendations,” lawmaker Selina told the media after the meeting.

The ministry has also been directed to go for action against those who will sell poor-quality drugs, she mentioned. The committee has also recommended to cancel the production of all kinds of Penicillin & Cephalosporin of below 22 companies:

  2. Aztec Pharmaceuticals
  3. Bengal Techno Pharma Ltd.
  4. Benham Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  5. Central Pharmaceutical Ltd.
  6. Decent Pharma Laboratories Ltd.
  7. Doctor Tims Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  8. Globex Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  9. Greenland Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  10. Innova Phrmaceutical Ltd.
  11. Maks Drugs Ltd.
  12. Medimet Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  13. Modern Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  14. Mystic Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  15. National Laboratories Ltd.
  16. Organic Health Care
  17. Oyster Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  18. Premier Pharmaceuticals
  19. Prime Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  20. Seema Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  21. United Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
  22. White Horse Pharma

ABM Faroque, a pharmaceutical technology professor at Dhaka University led the panel to probe allegations of irregularities against some 84 companies.

Other investigators were Prof Sahabuddin Kabir Chowdhury of Jahangirnagar University, Prof Anwarul Islam of Rajshahi University and Prof Sitesh Chandra Bachar of DU—all of pharmacy department.

Another investigator Prof Shawkat Ali was of clinical pharmacy and pharmacology department at DU.
